Following the announcement a few weeks ago, REX Simulations has released their next add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator this weekend. Called REX Atmos, this visual enhancement utility promises to transform the skies in MSFS, offering users advanced control over atmospheric rendering and visual fidelity.
REX Atmos makes extensive use of lighting to change the way the skies look in MSFS. By manipulating a range of factors, it aims to fix the many ways MSFS 2020 incorrectly depicts the atmosphere. It seems quite similar to what the MSFS team is building for MSFS 2024, which may be why REX has decided to price Atmos at a lower price point than expected.
REX Atmos offers a selecion of impressive features:
- Comprehensive Customization: Users can fine-tune weather, atmospheric, and environmental parameters to create their ideal flying conditions.
- Real-time Rendering: Visual enhancements are applied instantly, allowing for on-the-fly adjustments.
- Wide Compatibility: Atmos works seamlessly with Asobo live weather, all major weather engines (including REX Weather Force and ActiveSky), and weather presets.
- Non-destructive Implementation: The tool preserves core simulator files, ensuring easy reversion to original settings.
- Preset Sharing: Users can save, share, and download custom weather scenarios through an in-app cloud-based system.
- Intuitive Interface: An easy-to-use design makes powerful customization accessible to all skill levels.
In terms of the actual improvements REX Atmos introduces, it focuses on several key areas of visual enhancement:
- Cloud Enhancement: The tool tackles the issue of overly dark cloud coloring (often referred to as “ash clouds”), replacing them with more natural-looking, beautifully rendered clouds.
- Ozone Function: An advanced ozone function has been implemented for more realistic atmospheric visuals.
- Rayleigh Scattering: True Rayleigh scattering effects bring stunning light interactions to the sky and clouds.
REX says that Atmos is designed for smooth performance, even on mid-range systems. While adjusting settings may cause brief pauses, FPS should quickly stabilize. The tool is compatible with both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12, and can be used alongside other visual enhancements like ReShade or NVIDIA Freestyle filters.
Rex Atmos is available now in stores such as Contrail and simMarket, priced at $14.50 USD. An internet connection is required for the tool to function.
Regarding support for the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the company has stated that they are currently assessing the logistics of integrating REX Atmos with the new platform.
Importantly, REX has hinted at a potential upgrade path for existing customers. While details are not yet finalized, the company has indicated that customers who have purchased the MSFS 2020 version of REX Atmos will be eligible for a discount on the MSFS 2024 version, should it be deemed suitable for the new platform. An official announcement regarding this upgrade option will be made once the assessment is complete.
