Microsoft Flight Simulator occasionally receives aircraft that sit far outside the usual categories of GA, airliner, or military aviation. Flying Fries have now introduced one of the most unconventional examples yet. The Quasar, a fictional concept created by the developer in 2023, is available now for both MSFS 2020 and MSFS 2024 with an unusual mix of extreme performance and custom gameplay systems.
Flying Fries explains that the idea took shape over two years before reaching a finished state in the simulator. The aircraft reaches operational figures rarely seen in MSFS. According to the developer, it can climb to 10 million feet in MSFS 2024 and 275,000 feet in MSFS 2020, cruise at around 130,000 feet, and travel at Mach 7.8, roughly 5,000 knots over the ground. These are incredible numbers! The dev also says the aircraft’s systems allow for unlimited range and endurance by generating fuel during flight.
The feature list reflects the project’s wildly experimental nature. Flying Fries cites a modern engine model and fuel system, a detailed electrical network with functional circuit breakers, and a nuclear reactor intended to provide continual power. The package includes high-resolution modelling and texturing, a custom sound set, interactive static elements, and a wide collection of visual effects such as afterburners, heat blur, contrails, vapor, dust, and spray.
A mission generator built into the custom EFB allows the aircraft to transport rare cargo between almost 3,000 airports and around 100 cargo types. The avionics rely on the native Garmin G3000 suite from Working Title, and an onboard assistant named K.A.R.A. adds more than 120 lines of dialogue. Interior lighting is fully configurable, and users can choose from twelve liveries and three original pilot characters with individual backstories. Five levels of detail are included to support performance in multiplayer environments.
Flying Fries describe the Quasar as a demanding aircraft that requires careful handling, particularly during descent and landing after high-speed operations. The concept rests on the idea of travelling long distances at extreme altitudes, managing fuel production, and bringing the aircraft back to a runway at speeds that leave little margin for error.
The Quasar is available through Orbx and Simmarket for approximately $30 USD.
