SimWorks Studios nears completion of its overhauled Kodiak 100 for MSFS 2024

The Kodiak 100 has long been a staple for utility pilots in Microsoft Flight Simulator, but the transition to the 2024 platform is yet to be fully completed. Thankfully, that shouldn’t take much longer. SimWorks Studios has provided a detailed look at the progress of the Kodiak 100 for MSFS 2024, revealing a project that aims to use the new engine’s capabilities while addressing long-standing technical requests from the community.

While the visual updates are the most immediately apparent, the core of this release lies in a significant systems overhaul. SWS says it has rewritten the electrical system to improve load handling and has activated circuit breakers that were previously non-functional in the 2020 version.

One of the most practical additions for casual and professional simmers alike is the “Smart AutoStart” logic. In many high-fidelity turboprops, using the standard “CTRL+E” shortcut simply doesn’t work. SWS says its new system monitors ITT during the start sequence. If the engine gets too hot, the system will automatically motor the engine to cool it down or transition to a shutdown mode if a fire is detected. This provides a safety net for those who want to get moving quickly without sacrificing the underlying complexity of the simulation.

Harnessing the MSFS 2024 engine

The developer is leaning heavily into the new platform’s native features to increase the sense of presence on the ramp. The MSFS 2024 version will include:

  • Full walkaround capability: Pilots can inspect the aircraft, including the accessible cargo pod and engine bay.
  • Dynamic environmental effects: The airframe will accumulate dust, mud, and bugs, and will show water splats during rain.
  • Native mission support: The Marketplace version will be fully compatible with the MSFS 2024 Career Mode.
  • Integrated EFB: The new tablet can be mounted on the yoke or stowed in a leg pouch, handling charts, weight and balance, and flight planning.

Visual refinements also extend to the cabin, which will feature native 2024 passengers and variant-based cargo configurations. A remodelled cargo pod will also show visible baggage, which is a small but welcome detail for bush pilots who spend their time hauling gear into short strips.

Bridging the gap from 2020

The Kodiak 100 in MSFS 2020 received a “visual refresh” in February 2025, which SWS used as a baseline for this new version. However, the developer notes that the 2024 edition is a structural evolution. The G1000 suite has been expanded to include the full set of screens and options found in the real-world aircraft, and the Environmental Control System has been reworked from scratch.

While sound work is currently on hold to ensure the systems foundation is stable, the project is entering its final stages. SWS indicates that development is in its “very final days,” with a release date expected to be announced shortly.
