European flight simmers often find themselves hopping between major hubs like Frankfurt and Munich, but the charm of regions like Saxony also deserves a high-fidelity rendition in Microsoft Flight Simulator. Atelic is stepping in with the announcement of Dresden Airport (EDDC), a project that aims to capture the unique industrial aesthetic of the site and addresses a common community concern regarding the balance between high detail and smooth frame rates.
Dresden is not a typical glass and steel terminal. Its history is tied to aviation manufacturing, and the passenger terminal itself is a converted aircraft assembly hall. Atelic says they are prioritizing this architectural heritage by including detailed interiors for the terminal and the underground railway station.
This level of depth is often a double-edged sword for performance, but the developer notes that this project represents their most optimized work so far.
The developer also says that with this project, they aim to deliver their most detailed airport to date. A major part of this detail is found in the interior modeling, which includes not only the passenger terminal but also the underground railway station and specific industrial sites like the IABG and Elbe Flugzeugwerke hangars. To complement the structural work, Atelic includes custom satellite imagery for the entire airport area and custom animated ground vehicles.
Beyond the buildings, the developer says the scenery integrates with the existing MSFS photogrammetry for the city of Dresden. For those who use ground services, the developer is also including a custom GSX profile to ensure that baggage handlers and catering trucks interact correctly with the new gates.
With a release date described as “very soon,” this could be a major update for the German flight simulation community. Stay tuned!
