NZA Simulations’ stunning Wanaka region in New Zealand launching next week for MSFS

MSFS simmers are set for an impressive new destination in New Zealand as NZA Simulations prepares to release its extensive Wanaka region scenery for Microsoft Flight Simulator on November 4th.

Located in New Zealand’s Otago region, Wanaka is celebrated for its breathtaking lakes, rugged mountain backdrops, and its role as an adventure hub. Now, with NZA’s newest Proline release, simmers will soon have the chance to experience this vibrant area with a level of detail rarely seen in the simulator.

NZA’s Wanaka region project is spearheaded by NZA developer Stéphane Beilliard and covers over 5,000 square kilometers, bringing the depth and beauty of the South Island to life. Building on the success of NZA’s awesome Milford Sound scenery, this latest release transports simmers to Wanaka Airport (NZWF), a scenic airfield renowned for its role in regional tourism and its biannual Wings Over Wanaka airshow. The airport acts as a base for exploring Otago’s high country, attracting light aircraft and helicopter operators who navigate the mountainous landscapes that define the area.

Beyond the airport itself, NZA has recreated key landmarks and points of interest around Wanaka. Simmers will be able to touch down at nine meticulously detailed airstrips, take off from four heliports, and navigate to over 20 mountain huts dotting the scenery.

Featured locations include Makarora Airstrip and the Wanaka Lakes Health Centre Heliport, as well as remote spots like the Whare Kea Chalet and Aspiring Helicopters. Each site offers unique scenery and authentic touches, such as custom-built hangars, animated windsocks, and even hangar doors that open upon landing.

This scenery uses PBR textures, which help greatly in providing true-to-life surfaces and textures that respond dynamically to light and weather conditions. In the words of the developer, the Proline™ brand reflects a “new era” in flight sim scenery, built on modern design techniques to recreate the physical world with compelling realism both inside and out.

Simmers who also own NZA’s Milford Sound region will find Wanaka only a short hop east, making it easy to extend flights and explore more of New Zealand’s wild landscapes. NZA recommends installing MSFS World Update 12 for New Zealand to ensure the best experience.

Key features in the Wanaka region scenery:

  • Comprehensive 5000km² area coverage from northern mountain huts to southern Otago locations.
  • Multiple airstrips and heliports: including Makarora Airstrip (NZMW), Wanaka Lakes Health Centre Heliport, Aspiring Helicopters, and Hawea Flat Strip.
  • Detailed 3D interiors for airport facilities, including Wanaka Airport terminal, Skydive Wanaka hangar, and the Whare Kea Chalet Hut.
  • Enhanced ground imagery for Wanaka and Mt Aspiring, with custom PBR runways and aprons.
  • Animated elements: such as a hangar door at Makarora Heliport that opens upon landing and custom windsocks.

With its vast landscapes, iconic landmarks, and immersive attention to detail, NZA Simulations’ Wanaka region promises to be a standout addition to MSFS. Simmers eager to explore Otago’s rugged landscapes should mark their calendars for November 4th, when this ambitious scenery goes live. Stay tuned for the release!
