Just as promised last week, NZA Simulations has officially released today its highly detailed Wanaka region scenery for Microsoft Flight Simulator.
This new Proline scenery covers over 5,000 square kilometers of New Zealand’s Otago region, offering a comprehensive virtual experience of Wanaka and its surroundings. Led by NZA developer Stéphane Beilliard, the project brings a host of meticulously crafted locations to the sim, from Wanaka Airport (NZWF) to numerous remote airstrips and heliports.
Wanaka Airport serves as a central hub in the scenery and is known for its role in regional tourism and as the venue for the biannual Wings Over Wanaka airshow. The airport is an ideal starting point for simmers looking to explore the high country of Otago, characterized by its challenging mountainous terrain.
Beyond the main airport, NZA has included detailed renditions of nine airstrips, four heliports, and over 20 mountain huts scattered across the landscape. Notable spots include the Makarora Airstrip and Wanaka Lakes Health Centre Heliport, along with more secluded locations like the Whare Kea Chalet and Aspiring Helicopters base. Each site features unique details such as custom hangars and animated windsocks, enhancing the sense of realism.
The scenery uses PBR textures to deliver lifelike surfaces that interact dynamically with varying light and weather conditions. According to NZA, the Proline™ series represents a “new era” in flight simulation scenery, employing modern design techniques to accurately recreate the physical environment.
For those who already own NZA’s Milford Sound scenery, Wanaka is just a short flight to the east, opening the way for a breathtaking flight across New Zealand’s stunning South Island!
